After we revisited Pamantasan ng Cabuyao the Team heads out to Cubao, a 3 hour trip mainly because of heavy traffic to catch the last bus trip heading to Naga City, and meet up with Sir. Jun and Sir. Ren who were waiting for at the bus station,we readied ourselves for a 12 hour travel to Naga City for our Open Web Day at Ateneo de Naga University

Ateneo De Naga University

We arrived at Naga city around 5am and ate our breakfast at Bigg’s Diner and prepared ourselves for the 4th Open Web day. As the Team arrived at University we were excited, as we waited for Sir Irvin and the Wikimedia Philippines Team, We surveyed the area and enjoyed the relaxing scenery of the University.

We even put up the Mozilla Firefox Banner near the main building of the school Ground. At that moment while I was taking pictures I saw Wikimedia PH team from afar and waved at them they also set up their banner for a group photoshoot.

The main event is held at Fr. James O’Brien Library of the University at the Computer Research Center, the Registration started at 8:00am. Overall of 68 participants flocked the venue most of the attendees were Library and Information Science students,  Librarians, and Professionals. Open Web Day is an event jointly organized by Wikimedia Philippines and Mozilla Philippines Community.

The event started off with Wikimedia Philippines Introducing how Wikipedia works and they had a workshop on how any body could contribute contents to Wikipedia.

In their Q&A portion one of the participants asked ” as a Professor how would they trust Wikipedia’s contents if anybody could easily edit it?” and Ms. Bel from Wikimedia PHL answered “… that students should only use Wikipedia as a Starting point for research specially for Thesis and always check the reference at the bottom of the article”

After their workshop the second half of the Open Web Day started right after Lunch Break, and Sir Jun’s “The Keynote” had begun, an overview of  Mozilla, our advocacy, products and projects. Amazingly his keynote ended half the time it usually takes. THE KEYNOTE

For those who asked question we gave Firefox shirts and Swags, One of the most asked question on a MozTour was

“Mozilla as a non-profit organization, where do you get your budget for MozTours and other activities?” and Sir Jun explained “… one of the biggest source of wealth comes from Google, if you would notice once you open up Mozilla Firefox you would see that the default search engine is Google, and some comes from people just like you who donates, people who supports the advocacy of the foundation”

Next up on the line, Jean introducing of the project Boot to Gecko(a.k.a Firefox Mobile OS) along with the demo phone. the demo phone was passed around to be tested.

Days before the event I was tasked to rally up the Student Reps who would like to be volunteers. I have gathered 6 students who wanted to join. but the a day before the event when I was reporting my work  to our Community Manager, Mr. Eusebio Barrun. He told me that the whole Mozilla Philippines Team should only consist of 10 members including the Regional Leaders and other ReMo. So at that moment I was a bit in a tension on how I handle the volunteers that would want to join, fortunately 2 of them told they can’t come because of school works, then another one back-out because he have another event to attend to. I called the other one and told him  that the line-up is full, he said it is okay and I told him that I would reserve a seat for him the next event that would happen. he agreed.

The Mozilla Philippines Team is now finalized and ready for action. The Team Consist of:

  1. Eusebio Barrun Jr.
  2. Robert Reyes
  3. RenRen Gabas
  4. Joell Lapitan
  5. Jean Austin Rodriguez
  6. Rolly Riego Jr.
  7. Kevin John Ventura
  8. Kemuel Joseph Domanog
  9. Earl Palad
  10. Jerico Servo

Majority of the team comes from Laguna, On the day itself the Laguna Team set forth to De La Salle University -  Manila, our target is to be there at 8am to prepare the venue and the team and assign them their task. The team arrived at the exact time. and Entered Br. Andrew Gonzalez Hall, I was Amazed on the security measures of the university. I admired how they facilitate the guards. When one enters the person has to declare what Gadgets he or she has, like for me I have brought my DLSR and Tablet. I have to put the Model and Serial No. and the guard would then check what you have written and would approve it.

We are welcomed by the Wikimedia folks Sir Jojit and Ms. Bel, after the check-in process of the gadgets,we then headed on the 11th floor,Sir Jean Rodriguez with Earl and Jericho prepared the registration booth as well as the banners, tarpaulins.

then at exactly 9am, the registration started and students are already coming one by one, the assigned Student reps are seated on the registration booth. after the participants finishes the Student Reps are giving them Swags from Mozilla and Wikimedia.

The first part of the event was supposed to be an actual workshop on creating articles on wikipedia by Sir Jojit, unfortunately The team’s Internet connection isn’t stable, that made Sir Jojit talked about the General overview of Wikipedia Philippines.

Sir Jojit and Wikimedia Philippines

Sir Jojit on Wikimedia Philippines

While Sir Jojit is sharing their advocacy in Wikimedia Philippines, the Mozilla Philippines team are updating their Social Networking sites on what is currently happening on the event itself.

Social Media Updaters

After Sir Jojit’s talk. in the question and answer portion of his presentation there are many of the student participants who asked questions regarding their security for authors of article, How can one be sure if the article can be used in research and many more. The students seems to be very interested in Wikimedia’s presentation. Also Quoted from Ms. Bel, “Wikipedia is a good starting point for research”.

The Wikimedia team gave away offline version of Wikipedia to those who ask questions.

Then Lunch time came, the whole team ate together in the faculty lounge of DLSU manila. I was once again surprised because the faculty lounge is a private room for Professors in the canteen. about 15 persons can seat inside. The lunch served was GREAT!! (Thanks DLSU!!) both wikimedia and mozilla team with Mr. Ralph Regalado our Contact person in DLSU, had a little chat  then headed back to the room to continue the workshop. But before the mozilla team started, we did a raffle for the Mozilla Tshirt.

The First Winner was Ms. Patricia Bautista from De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde and It was Me who randomly choosen the ticket. (Congratulations!)

Sir Jun started his talk, a fast tracked version of his General Overview of Mozilla Community (We are very surprised that it only lasted 30mins!! HAHA!)
