Maupay na Udto! which means Good Afternoon the only translated word I know before going to this trip. Its been a month of preparation for this MozTour at Leyte: Visayas State University which was spear-headed by our fellow Mozilla Representative Melchor “Chor” Compendio, The team was composed of our Community Manager Eusebio “Jun” Barrun jr, Localization Lead Robert “Bob” Reyes, Remo Applicant Kathleen Joyce Domanog, Chor and Me the photographer(hehe).

As Early as 3am Joyce and I left our humble abode and was brought to the Airport by our Very Handsome Dad.(THANKS!), we waited for our friends to arrive at the entrance of NAIA Terminal 2. First to arrive was Bob, and we immediately entered the terminal and did all Airport SOP’s, and sat around the waiting area to wait for Chor and Jun, our flight would leave at 5:40am and we arrived on Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport at about 7:00am. We took a ride on a jeepney heading to a shuttle van service namely Van-Van’s, this would take the team from Tacloban to Baybay the first stop of the Tour.

MozTour Leyte Travel Map

“We literally crossed mountains  and bridges” quoting Bob to use it on our blogs. our first agenda after the long trip would be lunch!, Andok’s at Baybay City is quite different from those we see near our place. This branch has a dine-in service and has a nice view from the bay and the ambiance is very good as well. The weather that time was great, warm and dry.

Team arrived at Baybay Terminal

After we ate our lunch and got a good rest. Chor called a Multi-cab(it is something like a portable jeepney, commonly used by barangay tanods in Manila) and we headed to VSU a 15 minute ride from Baybay Terminal. When we arrived at the venue, we immediately prepared our equipments to be used and how the venue would look. My sister Joyce, readied at her station for the registration booth.

Preparing for the Event

My happy sister proudly wearing her first Mozilla Firefox Tshirt :D

The MozTour at Leyte: Visayas State University event started with Jun’s Keynote entitled Mozilla for Webgeeks. and “THE KEYNOTE” have returned, explaining the General  Overview of the community, even if  “THE KEYNOTE” was long(approximately 2 hours), the audience had fun and surely was listening well. The venue was jam packed that even the second floor of the venue suddenly got full and some are already standing beside the door.

Jampacked Session with Jun

Next in line was Bob, his presentation is about HTML5 Cross Platform Mobile Development, and of course including Firefox OS(B2G). Bob showed and demonstrated the first ever Unit of Firefox OS here in the Philippines to the audience. including screenshots of the User Interface and Firefox Mobile OS’ capability running on a local TELCO simcard. Bob even dared the attendees quoting

If anyone’s smartphones here can boot faster than the Firefox Mobile OS, Talk to me I’ll give you a prize.

Firefox Mobile OS with BobSome tried turning off their smartphones including my sister and Chor. but their units failed the boot test.

After Bob’s Presentation it was my turn. I was kinda nervous because it was my first time to present with more that 30 persons. My Presentation was about Mozilla Student Reps. I was always known as a happy person and always seen smiling, being like that as my nature, I decided to bring the happiness to the audience.

Mozilla Student Reps and Me

Since I am a product of the Student Reps Program I shared to them all of my experiences, what Student Reps do, and their benefits. I also discussed the difference of a Mozilla Representative to a Student Rep.  Seems my way of presenting is effective

Ren who were waiting for at the bus station,we readied ourselves for a 12 hour travel to Naga City for our Open Web Day at Ateneo de Naga University

Ateneo De Naga University

We arrived at Naga city around 5am and ate our breakfast at Bigg’s Diner and prepared ourselves for the 4th Open Web day. As the Team arrived at University we were excited, as we waited for Sir Irvin and the Wikimedia Philippines Team, We surveyed the area and enjoyed the relaxing scenery of the University.

We even put up the Mozilla Firefox Banner near the main building of the school Ground. At that moment while I was taking pictures I saw Wikimedia PH team from afar and waved at them they also set up their banner for a group photoshoot.

In their Q&A portion one of the participants asked ” as a Professor how would they trust Wikipedia’s contents if anybody could easily edit it?” and Ms. Bel from Wikimedia PHL answered “… that students should only use Wikipedia as a Starting point for research specially for Thesis and always check the reference at the bottom of the article”

After their workshop the second half of the Open Web Day started right after Lunch Break, and Sir Jun’s “The Keynote” had begun, an overview of  Mozilla, our advocacy, products and projects. Amazingly his keynote ended half the time it usually takes. THE KEYNOTE

For those who asked question we gave Firefox shirts and Swags, One of the most asked question on a MozTour was

“Mozilla as a non-profit organization, where do you get your budget for MozTours and other activities?” and Sir Jun explained “… one of the biggest source of wealth comes from Google, if you would notice once you open up Mozilla Firefox you would see that the default search engine is Google, and some comes from people just like you who donates, people who supports the advocacy of the foundation”

Next up on the line, Jean introducing of the project Boot to Gecko(a.k.a Firefox Mobile OS) along with the demo phone. the demo phone was passed around to be tested.

After the two successful Campus Tours Jean and I did, we immediately think of another event for follow up for the students who attended the Campus Tours, Spearheaded by Jean he set the date and the venue. The date was March 24, 2012 and our Venue is at Nuvali Sta. Rosa Laguna at Starbucks. Jean Confirmed that there would be 7 students that would come from Pamantasan ng Cabuyao and I said that I would have 4 students coming from Letran-Calamba.

Jean and I are both excited for this event, As the days passed by the students from Pamantasan ng Cabuyao is settled and for the Letran-Calamba Team the students went down to 2 reps, the other 2 students has school works needed to be done immediately. The time that the meet-up would start is around 1am, Jean already headed to Nuvali to reserved seats for us, While me and the 2 students namely Jyra and Joanna left Letran at 12pm and arrived around 1:30pm at Nuvali.

We sat down and had a little chat, and ordered our drinks, the heat outside was so intense that even inside the coffee shop it was a little bit of hot. The students of PNC arrived around 2pm, we told them rest first and relax and also order their desired drinks.and so we started, Jean led it by giving a recap about what was been talked about on their Campus Tours and I barge myself when there is more explanation needed, generally we talked about what was being a student reps would be, we also planned about future events, ideas for the engagement team, shared tips for students, career and business.

Mozilla Student Reps Meet-up

Joanna and Jyra

(Joanna and Jyra was tasked to do the minutes of the meet up, THANKS GIRLS!)

Then the heavy rain started to fall and the coffee shop atmosphere became cold. And yes! part of our Meet-up was the brainstorming activity which we share ideas for our favorite browser, and how they would contribute to the community, the students identified what they want to share to the community, everyone wanted to be in the Engagement Team(YEAH!!) -there are developers, graphic artist and for advocacy. I also shared to the students the experiences I received being a Student Reps to becoming a ReMo. Question that were asked was about the benefits of being a student Rep.

Me Sharing my Experiences

We talked a lot and didn’t notice the time, it was already about 5pm, we waited for a while for the rain to stop but it just keeps on pouring on and on. Fortunately there was a 7-eleven store near by and grabbed some umbrella and off we go, We we headed out the streets to get a ride, we rode a tricycle and was dropped at Paseo de Sta.Rosa. The team thought we could all go home, unfortunately we can’t, Heavy traffic caused by flood, Heavy Rain and Zero Visibility. Ahh! by the way! Jean took a photo of us during that night in the rain with his handy dandy Samsung Galaxy Note

Smile makes the world a happy place

So we decided to eat at the home of the Firefox pizza the Big 30′s, but before we arrived there, Jean met his High school friends and they chat for a little while and went to the Pizza parlor. unfortunately we can’t order the pizza. The pizza is so special we need to order it atleast a day before.Every one had fun, extended our networks and even had a a full belly!

Dinner with Mozillians

That day was so awesome and one thing is for sure. This is just the beginning of a wonderful adventure for our community! Rock On Mozilla Philippines Community!
